The drug epidemic is not like a storm or an earthquake. It can’t be solved by throwing money at it. Unfortunately, that’s what will happen: the government will write checks to the same big, and politically connected treatment centers, that have been providing the mediocre treatment that is not working—as evidenced by the continuing number of relapses and deaths. Politicians will be able to say that they did something, mediocre treatment centers will make fortunes, and people will continue to die. The answer is not to fund ineffective treatment, the solution is to fund treatment that works.
